I’ve been natural for a bit now and I can attest to my first year of my second big chop, how much of a product junkie I was. I guess it’s almost like a rite of passage at this point. We get so excited about all the knowledge we’ve learned about our hair, seeing our TWA sit proudly on top of our head and we just dive for every product we see.
It’s fun at first. I use to love seeing how different products made my hair look and behave, but after a year or so, the glitz of being a PJ just wears off. You realize all the money you spend on products that you don’t use, all the hair heating, curling and straightening equipment you hardly touch collecting dust in your closet or bathroom. The more you learn and get to know your hair, the more you settle into a simple routine to keep both of you happy.
So when I found out about the not-so-new method of rinsing your hair with rice water, I was intrigued.
The History of Rice Water Rinsing
Rice water Rinsing can be traced back to the culturally rich lands of China’s Huangluo Yao Village, where the women of the Red Yao tribe practice the method daily.
They are known internationally for their long, Rapunzel like hair. Their secret? They contribute it to washing and rinsing their hair with rice water.
Now there is technically no science to back up this claim of rice water growing your hair and making it strong and healthy. However, it doesn’t automatically refute that it doesn’t work. It seems like no one has actually taken the time to study it for a significant amount of time. Which doesn’t really make too much of difference to me. Modern medicine has come as far as it has because of the enormous contribution of W.O.C. If these women swear by it then the proof is in the pudding and I’ll give it a shot.
The best thing I like about this method is how cheap it is. Seriously! I love rice. I eat it with just about everything. I put it in my eggs for breakfast, I nibble on rice balls dipped in gravy for lunch and my dinner plate isn’t complete without a side of white rice. It goes with everything so how can you not like it? So here is what you need to give this method a shot….

That’s it. How wonderful is that?!
So now that you’ve searched high and low for your ingredients all you have to do is combine them. First, go ahead and clean the rice. A few rinses in the sink should do the trick. After that, go ahead and boil it in a pot of water. Now you don’t need a lot of rice, a little will go along way. Start with a handful and make more when you need it.
After you boil the rice, drain the water into a jar, it should be slightly cloudy and discolored.
Let the jar cool in a dark place for about a day. This will get the water to ferment. They say the slightly sour water is the best for the rinse.
The next day, when you’re ready to use it, go ahead and boil the water again, to stop the fermentation. Once the water is cool, it’s ready to use!
You should apply the water on freshly washed hair. I put my an an applicator bottle for easy use.
Once I rinse out my shampoo I apply the rice water and massage it into my scalp and hair for 15 mins. After that, I rinse it out with water, then finish my wash regime (deep condition, rinse, etc).
That’s it. You can store the remaining water you have in the fridge for the next use. The great thing about the rice water is that it can also be used for your face. You can dab a little on a cotton ball and apply it to your clean face. It helps with large pores, ache and helps give the skin a natural glow.
I will be adding this to my bi weekly wash routine. I’ll try and do my best to track the results but from what I heard, naturals from all around adore it. Not only did they see an improvement in their growth and overall hair health, but they loved how easy it was to make.
